We switched to using polypropylene because tests indicated the polypropylene is more durable than other materials we had previously used. Silicone is also extremely tough meaning AeroPress coffee makers are the now the most durable they have ever been. Materials used in AeroPress coffee makers are free of BPA and phthalates, and are made in the USA.
